Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) we receive about the Sussex County Charter School for Technology.
Yes! We are located off of Route 94 (North Church Road) in Sparta and near the Sussex County Technical High School. Since January, 2011 the school has had its own facility – a stylish and newly constructed campus consisting of a Humanities Building, Math and Science Building, which are modular constructions, and a free-standing, full size gymnasium.
According to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, “Charter schools are unique public schools that are allowed the freedom to be more innovative while being held accountable for advancing student achievement. Charter schools foster a partnership between parents, teachers, and students. They create an environment in which parents can be more involved, teachers are allowed to innovate, and students are provided the structure they need to learn. Because they are public schools, they are:
- Open to all children;
- Do not charge tuition; and
- Do not have special entrance requirements.
Yes. Based on the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, the Sussex County Charter School offers courses in Pre-Algebra and Algebra, an integrated Humanities course (Language Arts Literacy, Social Studies, Philosophy, and the Arts), Integrated Science (Earth Science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry), Spanish, Communications, Music and Physical Education and Health.
The technology component of the program involves Computer Literacy, Laboratory Science Technology, Commercial Art, Engineering, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Film Production and Electronics. Students also take seminar rotations in Holocaust Studies/Character Education, Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Performing Arts, Strategic Thinking and Study Skills.
The Charter School is a public school and free to attend for Sussex County residents and residents of surrounding counties.
No, there is no tuition. The Charter School is free to attend for Sussex County residents and residents of surrounding counties.
Any New Jersey resident who is entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade can enroll in the admissions process. Bussing is available only to Sussex County residents.
The Sussex County Charter School for Technology welcomes you to our community. We hope to make the enrollment process as easy as possible for both students and parents, and are available to answer all of your questions.
We are currently accepting applications. Please note that if your child is currently on a waiting list, you will need to still re-apply for the following year’s admissions. The online application can be found here.
As per our charter, seats are available first to students with siblings currently enrolled in the Charter School. After that, seats are offered to any Sparta residents, and all other available seats go into a lottery drawing. When seats are filled, the lottery determines the order of the waiting list for grades 6, 7, and 8. Applications received after the deadline are placed in the order we receive them following the lottery drawing.
